Cadets tend to start their shooting by firing air rifles such as the CZ200 and the BSA Scorpion. The most popular weapons cadets fire is the L98-A2 Cadet GP rifle. This rifle is a modified version of the L85-A2 rifle which is currently still in service in the British Army. The most advanced rifle cadets can fire is the Parker-Hale L81-A2. This rifle is solely for marksmanship. We fire this rifle from ranges of 100m to 600m and more.
1454 Squadron is lucky to have an indoor Air Rifle range. Within this range, cadets will be able to learn basic marksmanship on air rifles and build their foundational understanding of the principles of marksmanship. Our indoor range allows cadets to fire from 6 yards giving them a taste of more advanced marksmanship they can go on to do in the future.
At our squadron, we have a focus on marksmanship due to the widespread interest. We have a focus on sending 1454 teams to national competitions such as ISCRM and CISSAM. These are very prestigious competitions which require a high level of marksmanship. Due to our highly qualified and highly trained staff, we have the ability to train cadets up to National standards so they can compete in these competitions. As well as this, our squadron has many experienced cadets who are always willing to go onto shooting weekends to help train and coach new firers. This is all part of our 1454 Harrow team-focused mindset.
Incorporating shooting activities provides Royal Air Force Air Cadets with valuable skills, confidence, and foundations for their future careers and interests. The lessons learned on the range go far beyond just marksmanship.
